We know summer is a busy season with lots of interruptions to your normal routines and opportunities to spend time camping, traveling, fishing, hiking, and plenty of indoor recreation as well. Despite this busyness, we recommend doing everything you can to avoid the temptation to let your oral hygiene habits slide so that you don’t succumb to the ravages of cavities.

To keep your teeth healthy and strong all year round, you will need to keep your mouth free from bacteria and food particles. These can combine into dental plaque, that sticky film which coats the teeth and gums after you eat and drink.

Plaque contains acids that coat tooth enamel which erodes the enamel over time. This eventually leads to holes in the enamel, weakening it and allowing the dentin beneath and eventually the tooth pulp to become exposed. Every time you consume sugars and acidic foods your enamel is at risk for erosion unless you clean your teeth and gums every day.

Daily plaque removal involves diligent daily brushing for two minutes a day at least twice a day. Flossing between the teeth and along the gumline at least once a day will clean those areas your toothbrush can’t reach. If you are prone to cavities, you may also want to follow up with an antibacterial mouth rinse. Always use ADA approved products that carry the American Dental Association Seal of Acceptance. This ensures that your products are both safe and proven effective.

This summer, stay on top of your daily oral hygiene so that you can keep your teeth healthy and strong.  If you have any questions or need to schedule a visit with our team in Enfield, Connecticut, please call Associates in Dentistry at 860-745-2712 today. Dr. Alexander Zubkov, Dr. Eric Jacobs, Dr. Sunny Park, and Dr. Joshua Lomke look forward to keeping your smile healthy and confident all year round!
